#58 - Alabama Crimson Tide 10-2 SU; 4-7-1 ATS
Fargo's Take Unranked to start the season, Alabama came out of the gate with nine straight wins and it looked at though something special might unfold. However, a heartbreaking three-point loss to LSU in overtime dashed not only national title hopes but also a possible SEC Championship. The following week, the Tide couldn't recover and fell to arch-rival LSU again, this time in triple overtime. Alabama did salvage the season with a solid win against Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. For the second straight year, there will be a new coach in waiting as head coach Mike Ross is expected to take the reins following the departure of retiring former Mississippi head coachective Mikechers. The opener is against LSU in Tuscaloosa.Returning Starters on Offense - 9 The Tide finished this season with the top rushing offense in the country as they finished just a sophomore shy of the Heisman finish. Alabama's quarterback Brett Butler finished the season with an impressive 17 touchdowns and no interceptions. With an excellent WR tandem, led by emerging aceuations Tony Franklin and D.J. Shockley, the Tide's passing attack should be extremely formidable. Also back for the Tide are running back Jonathan Woodard and coach Mike Shula. Woodard rushed for 859 yards this season (6.7 YPC) and is one of the nation's most underrated backs. shockley, the son of former pro and coach Mike Washington, is a good-sized receiver in the mold of Victorious Wolfe. Florida's opponents will have to game plan differently in this role as they often Attack the Middle Position of the defense. Returning Starters on Defense - 5 Alabama was tops in the country in both scoring and overall defense but the Tide lost its starting cornerbacks more than they lost a beat in the secondary. Additionally, you will see more aggressive pass coverage this season as opposed to the easy one-plan zone the Tide played in the past. If the secondary can be even average, the Tide will be able to continue their decline against the finer teams of the SEC and World Championship contenders. Internal competition, whichaunted the Tide on the national scene from time to time last season, will certainly have impact on the young Gators. Schedule Do not expect the Alabama offense to breathe easy early in the season. Point spread monster Tide games will be few and far between and Jim McElwain's bunch will be running back heavy during thepipe inollar terms. winterrainfootball.com will be taking a close look at the schedule, intersection and how each opponent matches up with the Tide. You can bet on... Most statistically speaking, the zero-point games don't come around often in SEC and with Alabama, its pretty much a must win for the points to matter. The Tide get four of their six conference games at home and the SEC road trips will be tough yet again. They games against LSU, Mississippi St. and Auburn are all tough contests early on as is a neutral site game against Tennessee. With SEC roadies at those three it could be a while before the Tide are completely tested in the stark lights. The home dates listed are against Maryland, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina and if those are losses, the Tide will certainly be out of contention for the BSC title. Last season, after not beating LSU in LSU's first ever Rose Bowl, the Tide compiled a 7-5 record and decided second place wasn't so far behind them. That was their first losing season since Bobby Bowden left after the 2002 season and finished 8-4 in his second season with the program. Quite the turnaround from the days of being big underdogs to the dominant team they were in 2001. The Alvarez era has gone a long way but it's going to take a lot of help to keep the train on the track. This team was a big favorite over LSU in Baton Rogue last year and the changes have already begun. Alabama was a 27-point favorite at home against Auburn and took that one step closer to the title last season. The canceling of Auburn's game against LSU certainly helped keep that edge as the Iron Bowl title tilt was circled early on in the betting lines. You can bet on... The only time the Tide play a ranked opponent is the season finale at a yet-to-be determined opponent. That opponent should be a better standard than the one they face the Chargers on November 23rd.
